Struggling to “Get Things Done?” Choose Peace!

by Cheryl Brewster

“The ABCs of Intuition,” are a form of mindfulness that I developed several years ago.  The simplicity of “Aware, Breathe, Connect” increases awareness, which expands choice. Where are we really putting our thoughts and energy? Is it effective?  As we learn to expand awareness through the breath, we learn how to drop stress. This connects us purposefully back into our inner wisdom, the home of solutions. Easy to say, harder to do.

Part of managing change effectively is knowing that no matter what happens, we can handle it. We will know what to do. Choosing peace on a daily basis is more than an affirmation. It’s a lifestyle choice. A powerful one. It’s a daily practice that frees up creative energy and best practice solutions. Choosing peace is mindfulness in action, leading to new insights, options and expanded awareness.

What happens as you make peace a purposeful, deliberate choice, in getting things done today? How will it affect your results? How will you feel about yourself and your day?

Simplicity knocks the socks off stress. It engages flow and keeps us tapped into the rhythm of life.  Imagine the power of flow in your life by daily, consistently, making peace your practice in getting things done! What would your projects look like from this perspective? How about how you communicate with others, and those tricky triggers that can come up when you least expect them?

Peace is power. It’s a commodity we don’t use as often as we could.  It leads to healthy self-image, the cornerstone result of  personal effectiveness, self-growth and development. It’s pre-requisite to true prosperity ensures long-term, authentic success. In its daily practice, we increase the value of our investment. But we can only do so, through a firm resolve and determination to stay on track, no matter what.  Easy to say, harder to do, but so worth the effort.

Success or Failure – The Key to Problem Solving is Attitude

by Cheryl Brewster

What if our problems aren’t the REAL problem? What if the real problem lies in our attitude about the problem? That’s what Norman Vincent Peale, father of positive thinking cautioned when he said “Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure.”

Have you noticed that when you’re on edge with a problem that it can become difficult to stay positive and focused? Have you noticed how your mood is affected and your normal resiliency is challenged? Research shows that it’s easier to believe the” bad stuff ” when faced with challenges that make us feel unhappy or nervous—a phenomenon known as memory bias. “Our moods shape our ability to recall things about ourselves,” explains University of Toronto Psychotherapist, Zindel Segal, PhD. “Naturally, when you’re feeling down, it’s easier to recall failures or times when you’ve messed up. The mind is mired in a negative view. The same holds true for anxiety: Someone who is timid or frightened might be leery of a new situation, might look for comfort in ways she’s been able to secure it before. It’s staying with the devil you know.”

So to solve our problems, we need to be AWARE and check out our ATTITUDES… a subtle but hugely important step that’s easy to miss because it appears so obvious that we skip it.
In the flying industry, a detailed check-list and “walk-around” the aircraft takes place before each flight…. no matter how seasoned a pilot is, this checklist and walk around must be completed each and every time. So too with us, at the start of each day, a check-list and  walk-around our attitudes, will keep us safe, prevent problems that could have been avoided, and keep us motivated in personal effectiveness to reach our dreams and goals.

1. Mindfulness
Defined as “paying attention in a certain way, on purpose, without judgement,”(Jon Kabbat-Zinn), mindfulness helps keep our awareness (attention) engaged so we’re able to act consciously instead of unconsciously. Developing mindfulness improves our understanding of what’s going on in any situation. It creates a “pattern interrupt ,” so that instead of being distracted or overcome by emotions or messy thinking we determine where our attitude really is – effective, healthy and empowered, or needing an “attitudinal adjustment.”
Application: pick an area in life that you’d like to bring more success to. Take a few deep breaths and observe from mindfulness… what do you see or hear from this quiet place?

2. Enthusiasm
“Every production of genius must be the production of enthusiasm. “Benjamin Disraeli
Enthusiasm re-frames problems and offers new perspectives…. it grows hope, optimism and gratitude, the great elixirs of transformation. Enthusiasm opens pathways to new ways of thinking which brings more choices in how to respond.  Application: How can enthusiasm help you work effectively in the challenged areas of your life? Decide and take Action!

3. Action
“You must make a decision that you are going to move on. It won’t happen automatically. You will have to rise up and say, ‘I don’t care how hard this is, I don’t care how disappointed I am, I’m not going to let this get the best of me. I’m moving on with my life.”  These inspired words from Joel Osteen say it all… solutions come through action.  Application:  Strengthen your commitment to yourself. What action will you take to move on from your challenges? Because thought precedes all action, what thoughts do you now need to think? What is that internal communication that needs to take place? Commit to action from these empowered thoughts. This is self inspired, personal development at its best.

4. Affirm a positive, enthusiastic mindset to fuel consistent action
Constant, repeated self talk and images that are positive and rewarding, focus the subconscious from what we don’t want to what we do want (and believe we can create).
Be vigilant in catching thoughts and words to “release and replace.” E.g., thinking/saying “I’m always behind, there’s never enough time in the day” is a self-fulfilling prophecy…
Application: Affirm a new mindset and actions with “in-process” statements like “I have a new attitude! Each day  and in every way, I’m more and more effective in accomplishing my goals!”  Here’s one of my favorite daily affirmations based on the Hindu word of “Namaskar”:

“I salute the divinity in myself.
I am strong and able.
I can do all that I need to do this day.
My mind is alert, my body vital and healthy and my way will be strewn with golden opportunities.
No matter what this day may bring to me, there is in me that which is great enough to meet it, overcome it, and be blessed by it!”
Namaskar

5. Make the word “Perseverance” a part of your vocabulary. Be Persevering for and with Enthusiasm!Winston Churhill Enthusiasm
Norman Vincent Peale couldn’t say enough about it:  “Enthusiasm spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.”
Application: When challenge comes, what if enthusiasm became your first response mechanism? Imagine the stress prevention that would take place in this one small technique?

Success or Failure, Mediocrity or Accomplishment, Attitude makes all the difference because it’s a “now” process that activates the happiness, peace and prosperity in the NOW, guaranteeing a future that just keeps getting better and better, no matter what.

Procrastination – Busted! 5 simple steps to freedom!

by Cheryl Brewster

What’s on your procrastination list? Procrastination is heavy and binding. Left unchecked for too long, its energy field grows bigger, stronger and more difficult to dissolve. Those tiny  “later” messages can soon become “never” messages. So what to do if those procrastination habits are out of control? Take heart! It took time for them to get that way, but they don’t need to stay that way. Besides, procrastination energy is potential energy just waiting to be used differently!

procrastination cartoon

Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished. It is the practice of doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, or carrying out less urgent tasks instead of more urgent ones, thus putting off impending tasks to a later time. (Wikkipedia)

Step#1 – You CAN change so be willing to!
Start with how you FEEL about your procrastination habits. No matter how much we want to break free, we never will if we’re condemning ourselves for what got us here. And in fact, isn’t that the biggest procrastination of all? Not allowing yourself to see possibilities for something different is simply an incorrect thinking habit.  Be willing to see it that way by dropping the guilt and self-recrimination and choosing to make a positive change. The most authentic, heart-felt success stories are from people who took a serious challenge or obstacle and mastered it. The reframe here, is that you CAN bust the procrastination habit simply starting with one decision at a time and building on it.

Step #2 – Start with where you are.
Nothing feeds overwhelm more than trying to do too many things at one time. We set ourselves up for failure by not seeing where we’re simply trying to do too much. By asking yourself if you could only do one thing today and still feel successful, you create an immediate starting point! A clear path begins to emerge and you are on your way. Like the old proverb says, the journey of a lifetime, begins with that first small step… just keep taking small steps.

Step#3 – Be task specific rather than goal specific
Goals take time and are comprised of many tasks. Without accurately forecasting how long these tasks take, we can easily overcommit. Get in the habit of deciding what goal needs to be completed in a given day, week, month., etc., and then  making a task list for each. Transfer those tasks into your appointment calendar… if you’re not allotting time for tasks, how will they ever get done, how will those goals ever be accomplished?

Step#4 – Mentally and emotionally “vibrate” to your BEST feeling thoughts
Keeping the visual of a sliding scale in your mind with pain on one side and power on the other, really works! Asking yourself if this thought is leading you to feel better or worse about yourself totally transforms the energy field that created procrastination in the first place. It frees you from the trap of having your precious energy getting scattered or sucked into ineffectiveness.  Positive, empowered thought pops you straight out of the procrastination habit and straight into energized, inspired, authentic, heart-centered, appropriate action. Pain to Power thinking leads to increased personal effectiveness, prosperity and happy, inspired living.

Step#5 – Be determined to be a vibrational match to your heart’s desire
Realize there’s no other alternative left to you – if you want to be free of procrastination, then what would it feel like to do that? Feel that feeling now and be determined to confront any lesser feelings with this very powerful decision. Tangible, physical results are simply the manifestation of these invisible, empowered thought forms.  Everything is energy! Empowerment starts in thought and ends in accomplishment, so what rituals or habits help you “lock’n load” into this energy field? Be brave! Committment to what you most want, begins with making it the most important thing in your life… you can do it! Begin and keep on keeping on!

When we see our procrastination simply as a field of energy that houses huge resources of potential energy, something profound happens… that one little busting through chink in the wall of limiting beliefs gets bigger and bigger. It’s the willingness to do this type of nitty gritty work that feeds the joy of our success.  Ask any great person how they got to where they wanted to be and the answer will be universally the same… they stopped procrastinating and took action.

So what’s on your procrastination list? The opposite side of that list also exists… feel that vibe now and voila! The procrastination energy field…busted!

Drop Anxiety to Manifest Goals! Part Two

by Cheryl Brewster

Part two of how to drop anxiety to manifest goals, is a continuation of part one where we learned that anxiety is a choice that we may or may not realize we’re making.

Awareness reveals this choice, giving us the opportunity to gradually replace anxiety with the joy of life.  As mentioned in the last post, this is easy to say, much harder to do which is why practice, practice, practice is so important. (***Please note that this article is not a substitute for medical advice. Use sound judgment; seek medical help if symptoms of anxiety persist.)

Awareness of our feelings is critical.  In his book How to be Wealthy, Healthy and Happy, Raymond Charles Barker, who influenced many leaders including Louise Hay, said that “Feeling is the most important function of life.” New thought leader Gary Zukav says the same, noting that feelings are the force-field of the Soul, and scientist Gregg Braden agrees, stating that “feelings are prayers.”

Manifestation authors Esther and Jerry Hicks echo this: “every emotion that you feel is about your alignment or misalignment with the Energy of your Source. Your emotions are your indicators of the vibrational variance between your physical Being and your Inner Being.”

Manifestation then, is using the power of positive emotion to evoke a vibrational match with your desire. Easy to say, harder to do, so how do we actually “do” this?

1. Deciding to feel good = alignment to Source
Decide that from now on, you are choosing to feel good about yourself, your intentions and goals. It sounds so simplistic, but if you’re not feeling good about yourself and your dreams, it’s because you haven’t actually decided to yet. (Try this… in this moment, if you REALLY chose to feel better about yourself, notice what happens).  Cool huh? No decision, no feeling better.  However, the better you feel, the more you are deciding to be connected to the source of Infinite Intelligence.  This is a solid foundation towards ongoing self development and personal effectiveness. Business great Napoleon Hill emphasized this constantly and is famous for saying that “all thoughts which have been emotionalized, (given feeling) and mixed with faith, begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart.”

2. Staying in anxiety or negativity = resistance to Source
Anxious feelings like self doubt and self sabotage will come up – decide to DROP them immediately. Feeling good is “allowing” your connection to flow (infinite intelligence), while choosing to remain in a negative vibe is resisting that flow. We get better with practice, can you be willing to keep letting go of your resistance? Start with willingness… that’s enough to begin with.

3.  Create the habit of feeling and seeing the end result before it actually occurs.
Strong emotion combined with clear visual images utilize the power of the subconscious mind. Done consistently, focusing on what we DO want, rather than what we don’t want, works. You know this from experience… so keep doing it! Feeling good now doesn’t have to wait until the goal is completed… in fact, the goal gets completed “because” we feel good now. We will always have new intentions, dreams and desires… they will never end, so the point is to “enjoy the now” as much as possible, by making that “now,” as interesting, fun, creative and fulfilling as we can.

4. Course correct as quickly as possible.
Be kind to yourself and get back on track as quickly as you can… the idea here is to be like a gun slinger….course correct as quickly as possible and drop any need to self-punish or self-sabotage. Just keep doing it again, and again, and soon your focus is always on target.

5. Use your Imagination
During those times when it feels difficult to switch from anxiousness, use your imagination… remember, the solution already exists… make room for it… use the ABCs of Intuition to slow your breathing and bring your awareness to the solution so it can “pop” in. What visual will you use? Make a movie in your mind… how does the main character triumph? Or, imagine sitting under a tree and watching all the leaves and branches holding countless solutions and possibilities… which one will it be? Remember, this is not about figuring anything out, this is about allowing something new to pop in. It may happen right away, or most likely later when you’re doing something mundane… that seems to be when most eurekas hit.

6. Stay Mindful
One of the best definitions of mindfulness comes from Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. He says that mindfulness is, “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally, to the unfolding of experience moment to moment.” The beauty of mindfulness is that on those days, where accessing our better feelings and thoughts is not immediate and takes time, we learn to accept. Acceptance honors the experience as an unfolding, without judgment which ultimately leads to peace through surrender. Now that’s what I call a vibrational match to awareness.

Manifesting goals requires action on our part… it starts with the power of intention; choosing to feel good about ourselves reduces the resistance we may or may not know we have and leads to inspired action. Anxiety is an indicator of that resistance; by appreciating the indicator, we have a powerful tool… awareness and choosing to match our feelings to what we most desire is healing, powerful and effective.  It can sound too good to be true, however, the Law of the Universe is built on Harmony…. all we’re doing is returning to our true creative nature… and that is the most natural thing in the world. Learning how to manifest then, becomes a joyful, easy process when we decide to make it that way.

Growth Through Struggle

by Cheryl Brewster

It’s inevitable. Struggle, heartbreak, challenge, disappointment and adversity are all a part of life. Although we may be intellectually accepting of this fact, remembering this emotionally  can be another story.    “The necessity for struggle… forces individuals to expand, develop, progress, and become strong through resistance. Struggle can, and does, become either an ordeal or a magnificent experience through which the individual expresses gratitude for the opportunity to conquer the cause of the struggle.” This proven principle by one of the world’s greatest influencers Napoleon Hill,  is a key tool in personal effectiveness and begs the question:

How do we ensure that struggle while initially, can feel like an ordeal, doesn’t stay that way? How do we transform  struggle into a magnificent, triumphant experience?

1. Focus your Thoughts!
The only thing you ever have control over is your freedom to choose. You may not be able to control events, but you CAN control how empowered or dis-empowered your response is. Thoughts are things and are incredibly powerful! Are you aware and directing your thoughts toward what you want, or swept away by what you don’t want? Which leads us to the next step….

2. Have a clear desire or purpose
A clearly defined purpose is an agreement that you make with yourself to control and direct your thoughts. It creates a compelling vision that that keeps you true to what’s most important. Purpose is like the “overdrive” in a car – when we need that extra power to climb those steep  hills, we have it when we need it. Without purpose, we don’t have the overdrive or the GPS… with purpose…. we are ASSURED that whatever comes up, we can handle it – we’re willing to pay the price of temporary discomfort, defeat or failure and keep going!  Over time, we learn to  overcome distraction, overwhelm and fear; our focus is on the deeper resources inside that help us enjoy life as we accomplish goals, even in the midst of the struggle…. because the struggle after all is meant to make us stronger, which leads us to….

3. Practice emotional cleansing everyday
Simple or advanced, emotional clearing techniques are essential; consistently using the ABCs of Intuition (Aware, Breathe, Connect) puts you back in charge…. awareness of what’s going on, breathing to release limitation, the old story, with it’s knee-jerk reactions,  etc., removes huge internal limitations. The more aware we are that resistance is natural and normal, it naturally dissolves to reveal the gems beneath it. Which brings us to the next key step to connect to those hidden gems and use them…..

4. Inner Contemplation
Ask how the person you wish to become would handle the struggle – a wonderful, dynamic panorama of ideas will appear on your mental screen… you’ll feel the options and possibilities in your body. Once you’ve done that, go into stillness to simply be.  The power of this step is getting you out of the mind trying to figure things out, and into an EXPERIENCE.   The power of stillness is huge! It’s what taps us into the subconscious  mind where solutions we weren’t able to access previously, are available. Insights may come immediately or later in the day, but guaranteed, through this process more insights, empowerment, confidence and the power to manage thinking does come, which takes us to the next important step…..

5. Take inspired action
Baby steps or massive action, from this place of inspiration, you’ll “know” the right thing to do. Self confidence blossoms, new energy appears and a sense of peace that comes from the underlying truth that all “really is well in my world,” emerges, which naturally creates the next step of….

6. Gratitude
The benefits that couldn’t possible have existed without the struggle are revealed; again it may happen immediately or later, but in the proven work of Napoleon Hill and other great thinkers, there is always “the seed of equal or greater benefit” in all hardship. This is the eternal truth of life’s promise… the question is, do we actually believe it?

These 6 Power Tips use the positive side of resistance… the negative side is refusing to consider that a positive side to struggle could possibly exist. This is aversion, and as Steven Cope warned in “The Great Work of Your Life”, aversion affects our capacity to see clearly and has severe consequences:

  • When we are hating something, we do not tend to see it clearly.
  • We see the object of our hatred as all bad-not a mixture of bad and good and neutral as it really is.
  • And finally and probably most painfully aversive states are separation states, from myself and from others.
  • I hate this moment. Get me out of this moment. I do not want it to be like this.
  • Aversion is a seat in hell.  It separates us from now.
  • When the mind is colored by aversion we can never be at ease-can never have a moment’s peace

Struggle then, takes on a whole new meaning – it’s the aversion to struggle that creates the problem, that evades peace. We either believe that struggle can make us stronger or we don’t. We either embrace its blessings and possibilities or refuse to change our viewpoint. We either invite the promise of guaranteed  magnificence or slip into life as a doomed painful ordeal. Struggle forces us to think, it can break our hearts and bring us to our knees, but it will never, ever leave us abandoned… we do that. The call to action then is from this moment forward, to embrace struggle for the benefits it brings… NOW!

Synchronicity: the hidden language of FLOW

by Cheryl Brewster

We are surrounded by a sea of abundance that flows to us!

  • How many times do you think of someone and they call?
  • Do you see recurring sequences of numbers every time you see a digital time display, like 111, 333,  555, etc?
  • Have you pondered an important question to have a billboard or licence plate in front of you declare the answer?
  • When you’re looking for something have you had someone hand it to you without them knowing you needed it?
  • Have you waited in traffic or been detoured only to find the billboard message on a passing vehicle displays what you just finished telling someone at that exact moment?

The odds of having such coincidences occur is mind boggling.  Given the obvious intricate intelligence behind such occurrences, we must ask ourselves, if these things are happening without our conscious involvement, what could happen if we brought more awareness to them? Can you imagine the possibilities, solutions and innovations that could be accessed?! How could this impact our self development and personal effectiveness?

In her book Synchronicity and the Soul, Nancy Seifer explains that it was the power of synchronicity to overwhelm the rational mind that held significance for Carl Jung (1875-1961), the Swiss psychiatrist who coined the term and brought the phenomenon to light.  Jung recognized that synchronicity, which he defined as meaningful coincidence, had the effect of breaking through the “rationalistic shell” of the modern scientific mind.

“(Synchronicity) is a form of coincidence powerful enough to shatter the notion that material science has discovered all there is to know about the universe.  To the person having an experience of synchronicity, the realization dawns that a mysterious force is at play in the world—a kind of “cosmic clock” whose gears operate on a more subtle plane.”

This echoes Deepak Chopra’s poetic words that “Synchronicity is choreographed by a great, pervasive intelligence that lies at the heart of nature, and is manifest in each of us through intuitive knowledge.”

And this pervasive intelligence is ours even without asking! All we have to do is pay attention to the Signs, Symbols and Synchronicity at play in our lives.
We are surrounded by a sea of abundance… but are we actually in flow with it or fighting it?

I’ve been a fan of this amazing principle of intuition for as long as I can remember and find it incredibly helpful in important decision making  and in situations requiring more clarity and validation. I often tell the story in my seminars of how I used a “Bookmark” to determine when I should follow the call from my intuition to leave the corporate world to begin my own business as a professional intuitive.  Although I knew in my heart that this was the right thing to do, it didn’t match the rational thought of my upbringing… My mind screamed no and my heart say yes, even though I’d be leaving a great company, significant income with benefits, and most of all, the security of a guaranteed paycheck for  nothing but a gut feeling and a dream.

Setting a bookmark is a specific technique that finds its beginnings in ancient times and remains just as powerful today.  In my experience, I used a symbol that was fairly uncommon – a boomerang – the “bookmark agreement”with the Universe was that when a real boomerang came into my life, I would know that yes, now is the time to leave the job.  (But I must admit, because this was such a big decision, I thought I’d help the universe out by adding a proviso that either one real boomerang came into my life or three smaller ones which could be in the form of a TV commercial, ad on a billboard, etc).

You can imagine my shock and delight when after a couple of weeks, feeling rather disheartened that the symbol hadn’t arrived yet, I’d picked up a book that I’d recently purchased. The book itself wasn’t something I was particularly interested in, however my gut “told” me that I “had to buy it.” As I flipped through it, I came across an interesting paragraph and there, deep into the story did I not only find the word boomerang “three times,” but I also found the meaning of the word… the boomerang is a sacred symbol cautioning us not to hold onto things too tightly,  for it’s only in surrendering and giving them to the universe, that they can be returned to us in bigger ways.

WOW!

I was shaking. This was something that you see in the movies or read about in books… this happened to other people, not to me! And here I was, not only with three small boomerangs, but with the meaning of the word as a sacred symbol!  I gave my notice the next day and have been privileged to live an extraordinary life beyond anything I could have imagined because “I was willing to let go and not hang on too tight.”

Powerful, beyond all odds and four months later, when I taught my first intuitive workshop in Whistler, what did the store carry? Two decorative boomerangs which I promptly bought. The third I added to my collection when again, trusting my gut to go to a certain store, only to find a boomerang with the engraving “authentic souvenir of Australia.”

Having worked with synchronicity my entire life, to go through an experience as specific and mind blowing as this made a huge impact.  I’ve come to appreciate that when we ACTIVELY participate with the “great, pervasive intelligence that lies at the heart of nature,” not only do synchronicities happen with more frequency, so too do miracles. Can you imagine the impact to families, business and organizations to harness the power of synchronicity both as an art and tool of science for brainstorming and team building? Can you imagine the solution and innovation?  The possibilities are staggering, and like all great things, it begins with us as individuals to apply and hone the hidden language that Signs, Symbols and Synchronicity in our own lives, to test and prove them. To create more FLOW in your home and professional life, consider what would happen if you:

  • asked clear specific questions of the vast intelligence awaiting you?
  • paid attention to what you were thinking before a sign, symbol or synchronicity crossed your path?
  • asked for clear, specific signs to underline or highlight a feasible action or direction to take
  • did a life review of where synchronicity has been the most prevalent in your affairs
  • discovered when there was no synchronicity in your life to find the patterns that prevent rather than propel FLOW in your life
  • willing to participate more fully with this great pervasive intelligence?

Basic tools to grow your awareness and appreciation of Synchronicity and self improvement:

  • notice the thought you were thinking just before a synchronicity happened
  • be clear on your desires, write them down and expect their fulfillment, by feeling them here now
  • keep a journal to acknowledge synchronicity
  • use ritual to honor it in your life
  • be firm and clear in your commitments
  • be diligent in replacing negative thinking with positive thought
  • ask specific questions (better yet, write them down and journal the answers when they come)
  • expect an answer without  attachment to how or when it is delivered, or if it looks different than you originally intended
  • learn more and resist less by spending more time in mindful contemplation and deep silence

We are surrounded by a sea of abundance that flows to us! By paying attention to signs, symbols and synchronicity, we harness the hidden power of flow in life and business. By applying it, we create the change we’ve been wanting and more. Dead without Desire – Re-inspire your Life and Business

by Cheryl Brewster

What does the word desire mean to you?

  • Is it vibrantly alive in your life?
  • Are you ticking off those magnificent milestones on your bucket list which can be as simple as weekly bubble baths or as exotic as trips to far-off places?
  • Is it about achieving that long-held dream that you’ve held precious in your heart for as long as you can remember?
  • Or is it something that feels elusive, that you haven’t really nailed down yet, and can’t seem to?
  • Is it downright annoying that right now, you just don’t know what your desire is?
  • Conversely,  does it feel hedonistic, selfish or wrong; always last  on your list after you’ve taken care of your responsibilities in life… e.g., getting “reality” taken care of before you can “go out and play?”

Desire is a hugely important life component that needs cultivating. It’s the stuff  that life is made of… that first kiss, that first job or business deal, the answer to the question “I wonder what it would be like to…?”  Desire may start off as vibrant, raw energy seeking to express itself, or it may bubble up  quietly over time, into a non-negotiable, in your blood, irrevocable “I just have to” drive that focuses on nothing less than  full completion..

Like a burning ember, keen for the passion of potential completing itself, desire needs fuel to become the flame… it must be fed to grow into the exquisite brilliance of accomplishment..  Napoleon Hill said it best over 70 years ago:

Strong, richly rooted desire, is the starting point of all achievement,
not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.”

But how do we get there when we’re just not feeling the vibe?

Modern day Russian author Vadim Zeland describes some key components in his book Reality Transurfing in a chapter entitled “Forward to the Past:”

Don’t’ wait for the future… Bring it into the current moment… allow yourself to have, right here right now.
This is about DETERMINATION…
The intention to have, contrary to the process of constantly fighting yourself.
The determination to have contains by far, more power than the determination to act.
You need to be completely ready to let yourself have.

This is inspiring, “shake-it up” stuff ! In other words, drop the internal fighting, and be absolutely diligent and determined to have the mindset of “letting yourself have.”  It starts with a feeling, or in-your-bones-knowing.  Best selling Canadian author Danielle Laporte echoes Zeland’s words in her brilliant tell-it-like-it-is style in  The Desire Map:

You’re not chasing the goal, you’re chasing a FEELING you hope reaching the goal will give you.  We have the procedures of achievement upside down. We go after the stuff we want to have and accomplish outside of ourselves, and we hope and pray that we’ll feel great when we get there. It’s backwards. And it’s burning us out.

What if, first we got clear on how we actually wanted to feel in our life, and then we set our intentions?
What if your core desired feelings, consciously, informed how you plan your day, your year – your life?

All authors quoted in this blog are Conscious Changemakers  encouraging us to be bold in revolutionizing our lives by leading with desire. It’s important! Laporte’s words are riveting:

It’s OK to want what you want. In fact, if you don’t start there, with actually owning your desire, you are doomed.
Own the wanting. without apology, and all good things will start to flow from claiming the desire.
We can’t hedge with desire.

So looping back to the first question of this blog:
What does desire mean to you now?
Have you been hedging with it… just dipping your toe in, rather than diving in fully?
Have you let your desire energy wane?
Are you wanting to give up? Maybe you just need to make changes so desire can blossom through different channels?
Its okay when things don’t turn out the way we want or expect them to! It just means there’s something better; there is always an equal or greater benefit to any circumstance in our life… but we must be WILLING to look for it… and be completely ready to let ourselves have it.

What single thing can you do to harness the revitalizing power of desire

  • in your job, career or business?
  • with those you love?
  • with the state of your health, prosperity  or financial affairs?
  • with HOW you live your life?

Heady stuff, isn’t it?! How exciting to give flight to our innermost desires with determination to bring those core, accomplished feelings into the here and now. It’s where all of our best work is done… we’ve proven it before so let’s do it again! It’s time to cut loose from same old, and refresh, rejuvenate and re-inspire our lives and businesses… Take Your Stand for what you desire and feel its accomplishment here now!

Keep it Simple – 5 steps to effectiveness in a frenzied get-it-done-world

by Cheryl Brewster

Stress may not seem like a  decision, but over time, we begin to see where it is. Fight, flight or freeze responses are immediate, but when we take a step back,  we do see that we have choice in changing our responses…. do that enough times and we have improved our lifestyles for the better. It all begins with baby steps and being more mindful…. paying attention on purpose without judgment in the present moment. In a world gone mad with deadlines and getting things done at all costs, we must be vigilant in honoring our values. We must ensure they are not being eroded by inner and outer forces that at first glance appear noble, but over time, diminish our quality of life.

Peace of mind = effectiveness. But all too often, our definition of effectiveness can get skewed if we focus on results at the expense of our values.

In his book “A Life of  Being , Doing and Having Enough,” author Wayne Muller starts out with these comments:  “we have forgotten what enough feels like…. So we work and add and never stop, never back away, never feel complete, and we despair of ever finding comfort, relief, or sanctuary.”

Sound familiar?

Step #1 – Evaluate Be truthful, honest and brave… If you keep your same daily routine, where will you be in the next 5 years?  Is that a YIKES! or a YES! response? What one small thing can you begin to do in your daily routine?

Step#2 – Choose Peace When we dig deep into our core, we find the strength to identify and drop old ineffective patterns.  When we focus on cleaning up on the inside, we find the strength to clean up on the outside too.

Muller’s take on this is profound:: “Here is the final thing we must know. We carry within us a fierce grace that will not be extinguished, does not break and cannot ever leave us comfortless. It lives in us. This life force, whatever it is that allows a blade of grass to push up, up through concrete to reach for sun and warmth. It lives in us. This is what we are made up of. If we trust in this impossibly resilient capacity to bear all we are given, and re-calibrate  our speed….”

Step #3 – Re-calibrate Your Speed Harness that “fierce grace within you,” it’s the booming voice that says “You can DO this!”  Fierce grace wins over the internal critic every time… it does require that you slow down to hear it, however…. it is always there…. it’s your noticing it and inviting it to lead that changes the trajectory of your life. It’s your willpower to Take You Stand for lasting change.

Step #4 – Use the power of Imagination! Imagination is the bridge from the unconscious to the conscious… it holds the secret solutions beyond the rational mind. It’s fun, refreshing and very effective… get relaxed, imagine what ease, effortlessness or flow would do in any given situation and notice the ideas or mental images that flash across your internal screen!

Step #5 – Breathe! If you kept a “breath log,” you’d be amazed at how little you maximize this incredible energy booster! In order  to access clear thinking and relieve anxiety and tension—like a plant needs water—your brain needs oxygen. Remembering to breathe helps take the edge off,  so you can respond from a more centered place which over time, creates a habit of calm and mastery in effective and accurate decision making.

Stress actually serves a purpose other than survival; it lets us know where we need to loosen up, let go, and enjoy the process of life and business rather than feel bound by them. Every challenge is an opportunity, every dilemma holds a a creative solution and every heartache over time can be healed… the freedom to choose is our greatest gift, willpower our greatest tool, and “fierce grace” our greatest birthright. Self discovery and self development are the twin flames of personal effectiveness; they hold the keys to what is sacred to us. They help us create a legacy rather than just get by. They are fed by the flames of fierce grace – that intrinsic desire to express our creative genius.

Time to Shake Things Up!

by Cheryl Brewster

“The term “spirituality” lacks a definitive definition.” This statement from the online etymology dictionary caught my attention…  (see more from Wikipedia) . How ironic and appropriate to come across a term that cannot be defined except by oneself! I have often found that until I can define something, I don’t have an understanding of it;  if I don’t have an understanding of it, then I am not consciously applying in my life.

What is your definition of spirituality?

In the defining, we begin to see where we are actually living what we say is important to us.  This practice of self discovery invites not only greater understanding, but greater authenticity and accountability – we begin to see where we are being effective or ineffective, where we’re being honest with ourselves or not.

Social scientists have defined spirituality as:
The search for “the sacred,” where “the sacred” is broadly defined as that “which is set apart from the ordinary and worthy of veneration.”

This begs the question, what is sacred to you…

  • in life?
  • in business or career?
  • in relationships?
  • in how you do anything – the big things, and the little things?

Are your life, business, relationships and how you operate “set apart from the ordinary and worthy of veneration?” Or are they dull, boring,  or overcrowded with anxiety,  overwhelm, reaction or repeated ineffective patterns? Is there a sense of energy and aliveness? Does your spiritual life seem separate or disconnected from your everyday life of down to earth, practical matters like running a household or a business?

Veneration is defined as respect or awe inspired by the dignity, wisdom, dedication, or talent of a person.

  • Where are you in awe of yourself and your life?
  • Where are you inspired by your own dignity, wisdom, dedication and talent?
  • How have you defined your life in ways that hold these parameters as sacred, as non negotiable?

The act of defining spirituality shakes things up – we begin to look beyond the assumptions and perceptions of conditioned thinking or inherited beliefs or habits that have lost their life-luster.  It’s the “shake-up call” to awareness of what’s really going on and what we can do to come back to a vibrant life filled with its own dignity, wisdom, dedication and talent. It’s the “shake-up” we need to  share this vibrancy with a world that desperately needs it. We live in a time where the shift of consciousness that is occurring is so important and so needed.  Look at just a couple of statistics and we are reminded, and called to “Take Our Stand”:

  • The Global Study on Homicide reported that in 2012, intentional homicide took the lives of almost half a million people.
  • The US federal price tag for the Iraqi and Afghanistan/Pakistan wars is  close to $4 trillion (let alone the cost of all other countries involved)
  • The  United Nations reported that in 2010-2012,  nearly 870 million people, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment
  • According to Food Banks Canada, nearly 900,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks each month and 38% of those helped are children and youth

Huh?! We live in a world gone completely mad!

  • How can this be happening?
  • How can it be acceptable?
  • What can we do to change things, to shake things up?

If each one of us took responsibility for honoring our own dignity, wisdom, dedication, talent, wonder and awe, wouldn’t we in turn, seek to help our fellow human beings? Isn’t it time we awoke from the apathy we’ve grown up in and ask those hard hitting questions?  And isn’t that what spirituality is about? As we define it for ourselves, we come to see the responsibility that we have to live from a higher place in consciousness – to engage the thinking and actions that will access creative solutions to heal our planet.

How can we make this a better world? By defining and applying our definition of spirituality… we move beyond our egos, our self absorption and limited perceptions; we begin to grasp what the mystics have been saying for thousands of years and we yearn to engage that infinite intelligence within… if indeed we are unlimited, infinite, changeless consciousness at our core, then what are we doing to demonstrate this for real-world solutions? What are we doing to “get over ourselves” so that we can instead “give of ourselves?”  I believe it begins with listening to “the call,” the call to greatness that comes to each one of us in the form of listening to a deeper, more authentic, awe-inspired place within us.  As we follow through in the commitment to do the work, we become more mindful of the possibilities… and THAT is the living, breathing, dynamic definition of spirituality… the awe inspiring experience of our infinite, changeless, effortlessness… imagine the possibilities of coming together from this amazing space of creativity to bring healing to our hurting world.

It begins one step at a time, one person at a time, with the courage to change, and none of us does this alone.  As Ram Dass said, “we are all walking each other home.”

Clarity through want/don’t want lists

by Cheryl Brewster

Like the ABCs of Intuition that are incredibly simple (Aware, Breathe, Connect) to stay present and focused,  writing out  lists of what you don’t want to clarify what you do want, can appear too simple to bother with.  But the benefits are huge and here’s why it’s important to use them on a regular basis:

Benefits of writing your “Don’t Want” List:

1. Instant clarity on what you do want.
2. Self discovery and self knowledge to reveal ineffective patterns and bad habits.
3. Awareness of just long these ineffective choices or patterns have been playing out in your life.
4. Empowerment by being reminded that you do have choice.
5. Awareness of things you didn’t see before.

Benefits of writing your “DO” Want List:

1. Improved vibe and mindset that increase awareness and determination.
2. Improved results by making full use of both sides of the brain   (Henriette Anne Klauser explains why in her book “Write it down, Make it Happen”)
3. Instant physiology changes that over time,  replace ineffective habits  with healthier ones.
4. Enhanced  mindfulness (staying present by paying attention in a particular way, without judgement)
5. Instant  stress reduction, increased feel good energy and  possibility thinking

The lists don’t take long, and when the “DO Want List” is read daily, with feeling, you begin more and more to engage both willpower and commitment to “Take Your Stand” for your best life.  Soon, wanting is replaced with having and your new, healthier mindset is in the driver’s seat of your life.

What is your “Old Story” and what is the “New Story” you choose to replace it with?
It’s good to write this out too in a couple of sentences or short paragraph; review it regularly and acknowledge your progress… it all starts with baby steps.

Use “in-process” statements like “I am in the process of trusting myself more more and I love it!” to help bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.  Soon, something very beautiful and wonderful begins to happen… empowerment is here immediately. Negative thinking is transformed to  peace and joy here now, because this is an “Inner Experience,” not dependent on what happens “out there.”    No more waiting…. peace, power, effective thinking and inspired, authentic action are here now because you took the time to engage in personal discovery and self development… all with two very simple lists. Again, the benefits of this very simple exercise are huge; internal mastery replaces control or attachment to things needing to be a certain way “out there.”  We become responsible and accountable for our choices. We become more intimate with our true nature and will settle for nothing less than being in integrity with that.
